display wont level

We have 2 iphone 5s. at first (we got them about 2 weeks ago) while playing solitaire or viewing photos we could rotate the display from portrait to landscape and they would rotate 90 deg.
Since yeterday both units will not respond from one to the other.
Is this something I've done? I had a 4s before this one, and I can't restore this one. We really like being able to read text messages or photos etc in landscape view when that is best.
