External speaker issue

Evening:

Last Aug. the external speaker just quit working. Then about 2 weeks ago, I had just finished D/l an app and suddenly, the speaker starts working...but next morn, again, no speaker. Did the same thing again a few nights ago, ...came on, but next morn, no speaker. It occasionally 'chirps" when turning on, but for the most part, speaker is silent. So, this leads me to believe (possibly) it's a hardware issue? Anyone has some ideas? [Galaxy S1--shw-m110s]
